Giselle's Garden and Greenhouse

Giselle's Garden and Greenhouse, established in 1999, is the collaborative effort of several divisions within Northern Maine General. Consumers from the residential care and treatment facilities have joined forces to make the program a success.

The facility is made up of an eight-acre plot of land, a greenhouse, and a collection of miscellaneous gardening equipment. The name Giselle's Garden and Greenhouse is derived from Sister Giselle, the Franciscan nun who was the inspiration for the project. In the early 1950's, she was responsible for maintaining Northern Maine General's farm.
Giselle's Garden and Greenhouse encourages interaction among the diverse populations served by Northern Maine General. Regardless of ability, there is something for everyone to do. The gardens not only provide a therapeutic environment, but also contribute to quality of life while helping individuals reach their full potential.
The farm produces organically grown raspberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, peas, green peppers, and string beans. In addition to these tangible results, the townspeople have begun to view the farmers as an asset to the community because they provide the area with specific goods - homegrown produce. Most importantly, Giselle's Garden and Greenhouse offers a therapeutic haven where those in assisted living, residential care, and long-term care can grow both literally and metaphorically.
