The Franciscan Home
The Franciscan Home, Northern Maine General's forty-bed assisted housing program, is licensed to provide care and assistance in a residential environment. Residents vary in age and in their needs, from the elderly to the developmentally disabled to individuals with physical disabilities. Residents are encouraged to remain as self-sufficient as possible in their daily living. The services provided by the home (such as meal preparation, personal assistance, and housekeeping services) are designed to help residents maintain their independence and to improve their quality of life.
The Franciscan Home, itself, is a three-story building located in Eagle Lake. The home has a great deal of historical and sentimental value, as it is the building that originally housed Northern Maine General. The now renovated boarding facility has enclosed stairwells at either end of the building and a full service elevator centrally located for the residents' convenience. Giselle's Garden and Greenhouse is located behind the Franciscan Home, giving residents the opportunity to participate in gardening activities if they desire to do so. Also close by is Northern Aquatics, a therapeutic pool facility where residents can receive physical therapy or swim.
Many local businesses are within walking distance of the home, including several small grocery stores, a senior citizen center, the Good Shepherd shop, a bottle redemption center, a video rental store, and a Catholic Church. In addition, there is a health center nearby, which houses a pharmacy, physician's office, and a dental hygienist. Transportation is provided primarily by the home and, as available, through the Aroostook Regional Transportation System.

The Franciscan Home hosts events throughout the year designed to welcome the families and friends of residents. In all of our activities, we encourage family to participate in every way, whether it be through attending holiday celebrations, joining residents on community outings, participating in special events, or in helping to design the resident's care plan.
Planning for the residents is based on their individual needs and abilities. This planning occurs in assessment meetings, one held within thirty days of a resident's admission and then semi-annually after that time. Residents are encouraged to work with staff to develop their treatment and service plans. The professional staff and departments of the Franciscan Home are made up of an administrator, a social services department, a residential care department, an activities department, and certified personal support specialists.
Staffed to meet a variety of needs, the Franciscan Home is able to personalize the treatment and services it offers. Services offered include: person centered planning; emotional support; medication management; community involvement; and case management. In addition, the Franciscan Home offers special services which have included animal therapy and horticultural therapy. In order to meet a broad range of needs for its residents, the Franciscan Home brings in outside agencies to provide additional assistance when necessary. Physicians, podiatrists, speech therapists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists also visit the facility. The availability of these services ensures that the boarding home can provide comprehensive medical, psychological, and psychiatric care to each one of its residents.
