Children's Behavioral Health Services

Children's Behavioral Health Services concentrates on the mental health needs of children in Aroostook County. This program addresses the overwhelming need in our community for children's behavioral health services. The program provides one-on-one, in-home and community habilitation services to children ages 20 years and less with an Axis I or Axis II diagnosis, who meet eligibility requirements. All referrals to the program are received from BDS. The goal of these services is to increase a child's level of social and family functioning by enhancing mental and physical skill development. Northern Maine General behavioral specialists work with children on an individual basis to decrease maladaptive behavior patterns by utilizing appropriate behavior management techniques.
Incorporating a child's parent/legal guardian and additional natural support systems, behavioral specialists works to optimize the child's positive functioning through cooperative service planning. Northern Maine General also works closely with case managers, collateral agency representatives, and various support systems to develop a partnership for planning a comprehensive strategy to address the child's presenting concerns. A child's Individual Support Plan is tailored to meet their current needs by taking into consideration their diagnosis, family and developmental history, current evaluations and assessments, likes and dislikes, strengths and deficiencies, and level of support in the community.
The program is clinically supervised by an LCSW and all program staff members receive required training and education to qualify them as a Behavioral Specialist I (BSI). As an integral member of the treatment team, the BSI's actively participate in the evaluation, treatment, and habilitation of children in central and northern Aroostook County. The BSI work with parents/legal guardians, case managers, program coordinators, therapists, and other mental health professionals to assess a child's skill levels in a variety of developmental areas.
