Adult Foster Care

Northern Maine General has several adult foster care homes located throughout the community of Eagle Lake. The homes provide an alternative to residential care for individuals with developmental disabilities.
The adult foster care homes are designed to be similar to private residences. Each of the six homes has similar physical characteristics: one living room, kitchen, and dining room; laundry facilities; two or four bedrooms, depending on the size of the home; one or two bathrooms, depending on the size of the home; and a vehicle for staff to transport residents to and from the community. Each home also has its own unique characteristics, such as vegetable gardens, outdoor patios, and outdoor grills for barbecues. Each home's location ensures easy access to convenience stores, banks, churches of different denominations, a post office, a pharmacy, and a health clinic.

Each home is continuously supervised by a house manager and assisted by trained staff members seven days per week, twenty-four hours per day. Staff members are trained in areas that include person centered planning, medication administration, behavior management, residential rights, and environmental safety. An individualized plan coordinator helps the house manager facilitate meetings. The coordinator also consults with professionals, develops and monitors habilitation plans, and assures the highest quality of care for each resident. An individual's program of training and habilitation is created by the waiver home staff and the professionals involved with the person's well being. Essential to the development of this plan is the input of the individual and his/her guardian, close allies, or friends.
The goal of the adult foster care is to assist individuals in living their lives like typical community members, with as few restrictions as possible. The staff of the homes teach residents the skills necessary to become as independent as possible. Since the homes are designed to function much like private residences, individuals are responsible for a variety of chores and the upkeep of the home. They assist in grocery shopping, help cook meals, do light cleaning and do their laundry.
The adult foster care team promotes individualized planning which encourages each resident to fulfill their individual wants, needs, and desires. These may include pursuing employment opportunities, participating in adult education, attending the Adult Developmental Training Program, increasing independent living skills, or maintaining family contact.

Recreational and community activities are also offered to residents of the adult foster care homes. Individuals may dine out at area restaurants, go to the movies, or attend one of the nearby community churches. There are opportunities to attend dances, sing-a-longs, fairs, parades, and craft shows. The community offers a public library, tennis courts, basketball courts, a baseball field, hiking trails, cross country ski trails, a skating rink in the winter, and public beach access in the summer. Participating in local activities helps residents succeed in becoming a part of the community, which is the ultimate mission of the homes.
